The Silk Route Journey
8 days/7 nights

Andalucia is Europe's most southerly region; enjoy a late autumn escape in the sun on this walk from the mountains to the sea.

The tour begins and ends in Malaga.. From Malaga, you are transferred to the village of Cómpeta in the Sierra Almijara. Enjoy a relaxing swim in your hotel pool before dinner in the village plaza. The next morning, we depart on our journey, along the old Silk Route followed by the Moors, who once inhabited Cómpeta and other villages of the Sierra. We descend to a lake in Los Bermeales , for our overnight. Casa Bianca The next day, a drive into Granada is followed by a tour of the legendary Alhambra, a walk through the city's Albayzin, then a quick transfer by train to undiscovered Antequera. This is the Land of the Dolmens and the extraordinary Park of El Torcal . From El Torcal , a brief train journey brings us to the ancient Moorish town of Ronda; from town, we venture into the Sierra da Grazelema . Beyond Grazalema lies the Mediterranean coast and Europe's most southerly town, the mysterious Tarifa. Settled by the Moorish invaders in A.D. 710, it retains its African atmosphere—a cubist painting of whitewashed houses and swaying palms.. Our hotel lies within the ancient walls, cooled by the sea breezes off the Straits of Gibralter. From the old fort, the morning ferry departs for Tangiers; a short crossing takes us to the city of casbahs, medinas, souks—which we explore with our Moroccan guide, before returning to Tarifa for the night. Our farewell to Andalucia takes us over the coastal hills above the Straits and down to one of the last unspoiled beaches in Europe. Afterwards, a quick van transfer delivers us to the heart of Malaga, a most Andalucian city, where ascending one last citadel, we bid Moorish Spain adios over a dry fino and farewell dinner.

8 days/7 nights

The tour begins and ends in Malaga. You are transferred to the village of Cómpeta in the Sierra de Almijara, where you are based during your stay.

Our first evening begins with a welcome dinner at Perico's on the Plaza. The next day, we walk along the ancient Moorish irrigation system, through olive groves, orange, lemon and persimmon trees, with views over the pueblos blancos/ white towns to the Mediterranean, until we reach Canillas. Our next day's walk wends up to La Mina at nearly 4000 feet, with sweeping views to Africa. No walk in the sierra is complete without following an old mule track and crossing a Roman bridge—a loop takes us around the base of Maroma and into the unspoiled villages of Salares and Sedella. Day 5, enjoy quiet time in the village of Cómpeta or an excursion to Granada.
