April to October • 10 days/9 nights

 

Day 1  LISBON

Transfer in on arrival to hotel. Afternoon City Tour, from the Jerónimos Monastery on the Tagus River, to the newly gentrified Chiado and Bairro Alto districts with their chic boutiques and design shops.  Early welcome dinner in Chiado.
Overnight: Hotel Heritage/ boutique hotel   D

 

Day 2  LISBON

Morning tram and walking tour of the old quarter/Alfama. Ferry ride across the river to lunch with a view. Afternoon Guelbenkian & Tile Museum visits. Evening, Fado Club for dinner and show.

Day 3  LISBON • TOMAR • COIMBRA • BUSSACO

Travel north to Tomar, site of the Knights Templar castle. Continue to Coimbra, home to Portugal’s most ancient university; walking tour, including University visit. Afternoon arrival in the Royal Forest of Bussaco and your palace hotel, built for a king’s mistress. Walking tour of the paths and 7th c hermitages and visit to the monastery where Wellington slept during the Peninsular War. Dinner at the palace.

Travel north into the Douro Valley. Visit capital of Baroque art in Lamego. Picnic en route. Afternoon, visit to port shipment town at Pinhão. Continue to hotel, amidst the vineyards. Dinner.

Day 5  DOURO VALLEY

Touring today includes historic gardens and private port wine estates, for tours and tastings, and the beautiful village of Alijó. Local crafts visits. Countryside lunch en route. Overnight: as above   B L

 

Day 6  DOURO VALLEY • PORTO

Morning transfer to Porto. Afternoon tour of Porto’s main sights, including a visit to a cork factory. Evening dinner in Vila Nova da Gaia, site of the port wine lodges. Stay on the newly gentrified Ribeira district, on the Douro River.
Overnight: Pestaña Carlton/ boutique hotel river front   B D

 

Day 7  PORTO •  ALCOBAÇA • NAZARÉ • ÓBIDOS

Morning departure for the south. Tour the great Gothic Monastery at Batalha; continue to the fishing town of Nazaré for lunch, with time to wander the artisans’ shops and open air stalls. Beach lunch before continuing to the walled medieval village of Óbidos, today a craft center. Free evening in the village.
Overnight: Pousada de Óbidos   B L 

 

Day 8 ÓBIDOS • SINTRA

Morning departure for UNESCO World Heritage town of Sintra. Afternoon visits to the Royal palaces, gardens and private palaces of the town, with free time to wander, visit quality shops, etc. Dinner in a  nearby village.
Overnight: Lawrence’s /historic  hotel   B D

 

Day 9 SINTRA • CASCAIS • CABO DA ROCA • SINTRA

Morning drive to the western most point in Europe. Continuation to Cascais, fishing and resort town, with free time to wander. Visit to Barnardo Collection and private art galleries. Free afternoon in Sintra. Special farewell dinner.
Overnight: as above   B D

 

Day 10  SINTRA LISBON

Transfer out to airport/train or Lisbon.   B
